(BROOKLYN, NY) – Today, Communications Workers of America District 1 (CWA1) announced its support of Laurie Cumbo, 35th District City Council Candidate. This is the latest in a series of endorsements for Cumbo, following those of Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries and Assemblyman Walter T. Mosley. Cumbo continues to build support in her bid to become the next City Councilmember of the 35th District, which includes Clinton Hill, Fort Greene, and parts of Crown Heights, Prospect Heights, and Bedford Stuyvesant.

“I am truly honored to have the support of CWA District 1, which has been a stalwart advocate for communications workers throughout the Northeast,” Laurie Cumbo, 35th District City Council Candidate said. “For years, CWA District 1 has been working with local unions to organize workers in the fight against unreasonable wages and discretionary layoffs. The members of this organization provide a variety of essential communications services for the people of this City, and I will work closely with them to fight for fair contracts, living wages and paid sick days for all.”

“Laurie Cumbo has demonstrated that she will work tirelessly to address the issues that working families in our city are facing, and for that reason we proudly endorse her candidacy to represent the 35th District in the New York City Council,” Christopher Shelton, Vice resident of CWA District 1, said. “Nothing is more important to Laurie than the well-being of the families in her community. We believe that Laurie will be committed not only to bringing more jobs to her district, but also ensuring those jobs provide fair, long-term contracts, so that families have greater income security. We are excited to begin working with her to make sure that this goal becomes a reality.”

CWA District 1 represents 175,000 workers in 327 local unions throughout New York, New Jersey, New England, and Eastern Canada. Members of CWA District 1 have participated in large-scale strikes in Bell Atlantic, Southern New England Telephone, and Verizon. With support from the district, telecom and health care locals have won organizing rights agreements which have facilitated the recruitment of thousands of new members. District 1 has been a leader in supporting community-labor alliances like Jobs With Justice and New York's Working Families Party.

Cumbo is far outpacing her rivals in major endorsements including: Congresswoman Yvette D. Clarke, Congressman Hakeem Jeffries, Assemblyman Walter T. Mosley, Dr. Una Clarke and the Progressive Democratic Political Association, New York League of Conservation Voters, Doctors Council SEIU, NYCLASS, Progressive Alliance for Political Action, Parliament Democratic Club, Transit Workers Union, United Federation of Teachers, 1199 SEIU, the Working Families Party, Lambda Independent Democrats of Brooklyn, SEIU 32BJ, Hotel and Motel Trades Council and the Steamfitters Local Union 638.
