Laurie Cumbo Announces Run for Tish James' 35th District City Council Seat



BROOKLYN — Laurie Cumbo, founder and executive director of the Museum of Contemporary African and Diasporan Art (MOCADA) in Fort Greene announced that she will be leaving her position at the museum to run for a seat on the New York City Council to represent the 35th District, whihc covers Prospect Heights, Fort Greene and part of Clinton Hill.

She will be running as a Democrat in the race for Councilwoman Letitia James' seat. James is reportedly running for Public Advocate in 2013, according to Politicker.

After 12 years in her position at MOCADA, Cumbo will be replaced by James Bartlett, former director of community programming at the museum.

 

Cumbo is excited for what she calls a "milestone transition."

"This has been my greatest calling ever and one that has been too powerful for me to ignore," she said in a statement. "I look forward to beginning this journey to reinvent and create a more equitable and sustainable community that will preserve our greatest asset, which is our diversity."
